GeForce 920M vs Radeon RX 5700 XT

Intro

The GeForce 920M features a clock frequency of 954 MHz and a DDR3 memory speed of 900 MHz. It also features a 64-bit bus, and uses a 28 nm design. It is comprised of 384 SPUs, 32 TAUs, and 8 ROPs.

Compare those specifications to the Radeon RX 5700 XT, which comes with clock speeds of 1605 MHz on the GPU, and 1750 MHz on the 8096 MB of GDDR6 RAM. It features 2560 SPUs as well as 160 Texture Address Units and 64 Rasterization Operator Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

The Radeon RX 5700 XT should theoretically perform a lot faster than the GeForce 920M overall. (explain)

Radeon RX 5700 XT 458752 MB/sec
GeForce 920M 14400 MB/sec
Difference: 444352 (3086%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon RX 5700 XT is much (approximately 741%) better at anisotropic filtering than the GeForce 920M. (explain)

Radeon RX 5700 XT 256800 Mtexels/sec
GeForce 920M 30528 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 226272 (741%)

Pixel Rate

The Radeon RX 5700 XT is a lot (more or less 1246%) better at anti-aliasing than the GeForce 920M, and also able to handle higher resolutions without losing too much performance. (explain)

Radeon RX 5700 XT 102720 Mpixels/sec
GeForce 920M 7632 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 95088 (1246%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the max amount of data (in units of megabytes per second) that can be moved past the external memory interface in one second. It is worked out by multiplying the bus width by its memory speed. If the card has DDR type memory, it should be multiplied by 2 once again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The higher the memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, High Dynamic Range and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that can be applied in one second. This figure is worked out by multiplying the total texture units of the card by the core clock speed of the chip. The better the texel rate, the better the card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels that the graphics chip can possibly record to its local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is calculated by multiplying the amount of Render Output Units by the the card's clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - aka Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel fill rate also depends on quite a few other factors, especially the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the potential to get to the maximum fill rate.
