GeForce GTX 960M vs Radeon RX 5700

Intro

The GeForce GTX 960M comes with a GPU core speed of 1096 MHz, and the 2048 MB of GDDR5 RAM is set to run at 1000 MHz through a 128-bit bus. It also is made up of 640 SPUs, 40 Texture Address Units, and 16 Raster Operation Units.

Compare all that to the Radeon RX 5700, which comes with a GPU core clock speed of 1465 MHz, and 8096 MB of GDDR6 memory running at 1750 MHz through a 256-bit bus. It also is made up of 2304 Stream Processors, 144 TAUs, and 64 Raster Operation Units.

Radeon RX 5700 180 Watts
Difference: 115 Watts (177%)

Memory Bandwidth

The Radeon RX 5700, in theory, should be much faster than the GeForce GTX 960M overall. (explain)

Radeon RX 5700 458752 MB/sec
GeForce GTX 960M 64000 MB/sec
Difference: 394752 (617%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon RX 5700 should be quite a bit (approximately 381%) better at anisotropic filtering than the GeForce GTX 960M. (explain)

Radeon RX 5700 210960 Mtexels/sec
GeForce GTX 960M 43840 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 167120 (381%)

Pixel Rate

The Radeon RX 5700 will be a lot (more or less 435%) better at full screen anti-aliasing than the GeForce GTX 960M, and capable of handling higher resolutions without slowing down too much. (explain)

Radeon RX 5700 93760 Mpixels/sec
GeForce GTX 960M 17536 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 76224 (435%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the largest amount of information (in units of megabytes per second) that can be moved past the external memory interface within a second. The number is worked out by multiplying the interface width by the speed of its memory. If the card has DDR type RAM, the result should be multiplied by 2 again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The better the card's memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that are applied in one second. This is worked out by multiplying the total texture units by the core clock speed of the chip. The better the texel rate, the better the card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels the video card could possibly write to its local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is worked out by multiplying the amount of ROPs by the the core speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - aka Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel output rate also depends on many other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the potential to get to the maximum fill rate.
