Radeon R9 M385X vs Radeon RX 5700 XT

Intro

The Radeon R9 M385X features core speeds of 1100 MHz on the GPU, and 1500 MHz on the 4096 MB of GDDR5 memory. It features 896 SPUs along with 56 TAUs and 16 Rasterization Operator Units.

Compare those specifications to the Radeon RX 5700 XT, which comes with core clock speeds of 1605 MHz on the GPU, and 1750 MHz on the 8096 MB of GDDR6 memory. It features 2560 SPUs along with 160 TAUs and 64 Rasterization Operator Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

Theoretically, the Radeon RX 5700 XT should perform a lot faster than the Radeon R9 M385X in general. (explain)

Radeon RX 5700 XT 458752 MB/sec
Radeon R9 M385X 96000 MB/sec
Difference: 362752 (378%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon RX 5700 XT is quite a bit (about 317%) better at texture filtering than the Radeon R9 M385X. (explain)

Radeon RX 5700 XT 256800 Mtexels/sec
Radeon R9 M385X 61600 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 195200 (317%)

Pixel Rate

If running with a high screen resolution is important to you, then the Radeon RX 5700 XT is the winner, and very much so. (explain)

Radeon RX 5700 XT 102720 Mpixels/sec
Radeon R9 M385X 17600 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 85120 (484%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the max amount of information (counted in MB per second) that can be moved across the external memory interface in one second. It is calculated by multiplying the bus width by the speed of its memory. In the case of DDR type RAM, it should be multiplied by 2 once again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The better the card's memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, High Dynamic Range and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that can be applied per second. This is worked out by multiplying the total texture units of the card by the core clock speed of the chip. The better the texel rate, the better the video card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels the video card could possibly record to its local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is worked out by multiplying the number of colour ROPs by the the card's clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel output rate also depends on quite a few other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the potential to reach the max fill rate.
