Radeon R9 M365X vs Radeon RX 580

Intro

The Radeon R9 M365X has a GPU core speed of 925 MHz, and the 4096 MB of GDDR5 memory runs at 1125 MHz through a 128-bit bus. It also is comprised of 640 Stream Processors, 40 TAUs, and 16 Raster Operation Units.

Compare those specs to the Radeon RX 580, which has core clock speeds of 1257 MHz on the GPU, and 2000 MHz on the 8192 MB of GDDR5 memory. It features 2304 SPUs as well as 144 TAUs and 32 Rasterization Operator Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

The Radeon RX 580, in theory, should be much faster than the Radeon R9 M365X in general. (explain)

Radeon RX 580 262144 MB/sec
Radeon R9 M365X 72000 MB/sec
Difference: 190144 (264%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon RX 580 is a lot (approximately 389%) more effective at anisotropic filtering than the Radeon R9 M365X. (explain)

Radeon RX 580 181008 Mtexels/sec
Radeon R9 M365X 37000 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 144008 (389%)

Pixel Rate

If running with a high screen resolution is important to you, then the Radeon RX 580 is a better choice, by a large margin. (explain)

Radeon RX 580 40224 Mpixels/sec
Radeon R9 M365X 14800 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 25424 (172%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the max amount of information (measured in megabytes per second) that can be transported across the external memory interface within a second. It is calculated by multiplying the card's interface width by its memory clock speed. If the card has DDR type memory, the result should be multiplied by 2 again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The better the card's memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, High Dynamic Range and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that are applied per second. This number is calculated by multiplying the total number of texture units of the card by the core speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the video card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels the video card can possibly write to the local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is calculated by multiplying the number of colour ROPs by the the card's clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel rate also depends on many other factors, especially the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the potential to get to the maximum fill rate.
