GeForce GTS 150 vs GeForce GTX 1050

Intro

The GeForce GTS 150 makes use of a 55 nm design. nVidia has set the core speed at 740 MHz. The GDDR3 memory runs at a speed of 500 MHz on this card. It features 128 SPUs as well as 64 Texture Address Units and 16 Rasterization Operator Units.

Compare all of that to the GeForce GTX 1050, which makes use of a 14 nm design. nVidia has clocked the core frequency at 1354 MHz. The GDDR5 RAM runs at a frequency of 1750 MHz on this specific model. It features 640 SPUs along with 40 Texture Address Units and 32 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

GeForce GTX 1050 75 Watts
GeForce GTS 150 141 Watts
Difference: 66 Watts (88%)

Memory Bandwidth

Theoretically speaking, the GeForce GTX 1050 will be 258% quicker than the GeForce GTS 150 in general, due to its greater data rate. (explain)

GeForce GTX 1050 114688 MB/sec
GeForce GTS 150 32000 MB/sec
Difference: 82688 (258%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce GTX 1050 is a bit (approximately 14%) faster with regards to AF than the GeForce GTS 150. (explain)

GeForce GTX 1050 54160 Mtexels/sec
GeForce GTS 150 47360 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 6800 (14%)

Pixel Rate

The GeForce GTX 1050 will be much (approximately 266%) more effective at AA than the GeForce GTS 150, and will be able to handle higher screen resolutions without slowing down too much. (explain)

GeForce GTX 1050 43328 Mpixels/sec
GeForce GTS 150 11840 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 31488 (266%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the largest amount of information (in units of MB per second) that can be transferred over the external memory interface in a second. It's worked out by multiplying the card's interface width by its memory speed. If it uses DDR type memory, it should be multiplied by 2 once again. If DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The higher the memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, High Dynamic Range and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that are applied in one second. This figure is calculated by multiplying the total number of texture units by the core clock speed of the chip. The better the texel rate, the better the card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels that the graphics card can possibly record to its local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is calculated by multiplying the amount of Render Output Units by the the core speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel fill rate is also dependant on quite a few other factors, especially the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the potential to get to the maximum fill rate.
