Radeon R9 M365X vs Radeon RX 460 2GB

Intro

The Radeon R9 M365X has a clock frequency of 925 MHz and a GDDR5 memory speed of 1125 MHz. It also features a 128-bit bus, and uses a 28 nm design. It features 640 SPUs, 40 Texture Address Units, and 16 Raster Operation Units.

Compare those specifications to the Radeon RX 460 2GB, which comes with GPU clock speed of 1090 MHz, and 2048 MB of GDDR5 RAM running at 1750 MHz through a 128-bit bus. It also is comprised of 896 Stream Processors, 56 TAUs, and 16 Raster Operation Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

In theory, the Radeon RX 460 2GB is 56% quicker than the Radeon R9 M365X in general, because of its higher data rate. (explain)

Radeon RX 460 2GB 112000 MB/sec
Radeon R9 M365X 72000 MB/sec
Difference: 40000 (56%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon RX 460 2GB is a lot (more or less 65%) better at AF than the Radeon R9 M365X. (explain)

Radeon RX 460 2GB 61040 Mtexels/sec
Radeon R9 M365X 37000 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 24040 (65%)

Pixel Rate

The Radeon RX 460 2GB is a small bit (more or less 18%) better at anti-aliasing than the Radeon R9 M365X, and also should be able to handle higher resolutions better. (explain)

Radeon RX 460 2GB 17440 Mpixels/sec
Radeon R9 M365X 14800 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 2640 (18%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the maximum amount of information (measured in MB per second) that can be transferred past the external memory interface in a second. It's calculated by multiplying the card's interface width by its memory clock speed. In the case of DDR RAM, the result should be multiplied by 2 again. If DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The better the bandwidth is, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, High Dynamic Range and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that are processed per second. This number is worked out by multiplying the total number of texture units by the core speed of the chip. The higher this number, the better the card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels that the graphics chip can possibly write to its local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is calculated by multiplying the amount of Render Output Units by the clock speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel output rate also depends on quite a few other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the potential to get to the max fill rate.
