GeForce GTX 460 (OEM) vs Radeon R9 M375X

Intro

The GeForce GTX 460 (OEM) has clock speeds of 650 MHz on the GPU, and 850 MHz on the 1024 MB of GDDR5 RAM. It features 336 SPUs as well as 56 Texture Address Units and 32 ROPs.

Compare those specifications to the Radeon R9 M375X, which has a core clock speed of 1015 MHz and a GDDR5 memory frequency of 1125 MHz. It also uses a 128-bit memory bus, and makes use of a 28 nm design. It is comprised of 640 SPUs, 40 TAUs, and 16 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

The GeForce GTX 460 (OEM) should in theory be quite a bit faster than the Radeon R9 M375X in general. (explain)

GeForce GTX 460 (OEM) 108800 MB/sec
Radeon R9 M375X 72000 MB/sec
Difference: 36800 (51%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon R9 M375X is a bit (more or less 12%) faster with regards to texture filtering than the GeForce GTX 460 (OEM). (explain)

Radeon R9 M375X 40600 Mtexels/sec
GeForce GTX 460 (OEM) 36400 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 4200 (12%)

Pixel Rate

The GeForce GTX 460 (OEM) will be a lot (about 28%) better at FSAA than the Radeon R9 M375X, and also will be able to handle higher resolutions while still performing well. (explain)

GeForce GTX 460 (OEM) 20800 Mpixels/sec
Radeon R9 M375X 16240 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 4560 (28%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the max amount of information (in units of megabytes per second) that can be moved across the external memory interface in one second. It is worked out by multiplying the interface width by the speed of its memory. If it uses DDR memory, it should be multiplied by 2 once again. If DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The higher the memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, HDR and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that are applied per second. This number is worked out by multiplying the total amount of texture units of the card by the core speed of the chip. The higher this number, the better the video card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels the video card can possibly write to the local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is worked out by multiplying the number of colour ROPs by the the core speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - aka Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel rate is also dependant on many other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the ability to reach the max fill rate.
