Radeon HD 3690/3830 vs Radeon R9 M370X

Intro

The Radeon HD 3690/3830 uses a 55 nm design. AMD has set the core frequency at 668 MHz. The GDDR3 RAM works at a speed of 828 MHz on this particular card. It features 320(64x5) SPUs along with 16 Texture Address Units and 16 ROPs.

Compare that to the Radeon R9 M370X, which comes with GPU clock speed of 800 MHz, and 2048 MB of GDDR5 RAM set to run at 1125 MHz through a 128-bit bus. It also is comprised of 640 SPUs, 40 TAUs, and 16 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

The Radeon R9 M370X should theoretically be a lot faster than the Radeon HD 3690/3830 in general. (explain)

Radeon R9 M370X 72000 MB/sec
Radeon HD 3690/3830 26496 MB/sec
Difference: 45504 (172%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon R9 M370X will be much (more or less 199%) faster with regards to anisotropic filtering than the Radeon HD 3690/3830. (explain)

Radeon R9 M370X 32000 Mtexels/sec
Radeon HD 3690/3830 10688 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 21312 (199%)

Pixel Rate

The Radeon R9 M370X is a little bit (approximately 20%) more effective at FSAA than the Radeon HD 3690/3830, and should be capable of handling higher resolutions without losing too much performance. (explain)

Radeon R9 M370X 12800 Mpixels/sec
Radeon HD 3690/3830 10688 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 2112 (20%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the maximum amount of information (in units of MB per second) that can be transported past the external memory interface in one second. The number is calculated by multiplying the card's interface width by its memory speed. If it uses DDR type memory, it must be multiplied by 2 once again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The higher the card's memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, HDR and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that are processed in one second. This number is calculated by multiplying the total amount of texture units of the card by the core speed of the chip. The better this number, the better the card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels the video card can possibly record to its local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is calculated by multiplying the amount of colour ROPs by the clock speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel fill rate is also dependant on quite a few other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the potential to get to the max fill rate.
