Radeon HD 4850 1GB vs Radeon R5 M255

Intro

The Radeon HD 4850 1GB has a GPU core speed of 625 MHz, and the 1024 MB of GDDR4 RAM is set to run at 993 MHz through a 256-bit bus. It also is made up of 800(160x5) Stream Processors, 40 TAUs, and 16 ROPs.

Compare those specs to the Radeon R5 M255, which has a clock speed of 940 MHz and a DDR3 memory speed of 1000 MHz. It also makes use of a 64-bit bus, and uses a 28 nm design. It is made up of 320 SPUs, 20 Texture Address Units, and 8 Raster Operation Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

The Radeon HD 4850 1GB, in theory, should perform quite a bit faster than the Radeon R5 M255 overall. (explain)

Radeon HD 4850 1GB 63552 MB/sec
Radeon R5 M255 16000 MB/sec
Difference: 47552 (297%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon HD 4850 1GB will be much (approximately 33%) faster with regards to AF than the Radeon R5 M255. (explain)

Radeon HD 4850 1GB 25000 Mtexels/sec
Radeon R5 M255 18800 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 6200 (33%)

Pixel Rate

If running with high levels of AA is important to you, then the Radeon HD 4850 1GB is a better choice, by far. (explain)

Radeon HD 4850 1GB 10000 Mpixels/sec
Radeon R5 M255 7520 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 2480 (33%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the maximum amount of data (counted in MB per second) that can be moved past the external memory interface in one second. It is calculated by multiplying the bus width by its memory speed. If the card has DDR type RAM, it must be multiplied by 2 once again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The better the memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, High Dynamic Range and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that can be applied in one second. This number is worked out by multiplying the total texture units of the card by the core speed of the chip. The higher this number, the better the card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels that the graphics card can possibly record to its local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is worked out by multiplying the number of ROPs by the the core clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - aka Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel fill rate also depends on quite a few other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to get to the maximum fill rate.
