GeForce GTX 980 vs Radeon R9 M365X

Intro

The GeForce GTX 980 comes with a clock frequency of 1126 MHz and a GDDR5 memory frequency of 1750 MHz. It also uses a 256-bit memory bus, and makes use of a 28 nm design. It is comprised of 2048 SPUs, 128 TAUs, and 64 ROPs.

Compare all that to the Radeon R9 M365X, which features GPU clock speed of 925 MHz, and 4096 MB of GDDR5 memory set to run at 1125 MHz through a 128-bit bus. It also features 640 SPUs, 40 TAUs, and 16 Raster Operation Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

In theory, the GeForce GTX 980 is 211% faster than the Radeon R9 M365X overall, because of its greater bandwidth. (explain)

GeForce GTX 980 224000 MB/sec
Radeon R9 M365X 72000 MB/sec
Difference: 152000 (211%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce GTX 980 is a lot (approximately 290%) more effective at texture filtering than the Radeon R9 M365X. (explain)

GeForce GTX 980 144128 Mtexels/sec
Radeon R9 M365X 37000 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 107128 (290%)

Pixel Rate

The GeForce GTX 980 should be a lot (more or less 387%) more effective at full screen anti-aliasing than the Radeon R9 M365X, and also will be capable of handling higher resolutions while still performing well. (explain)

GeForce GTX 980 72064 Mpixels/sec
Radeon R9 M365X 14800 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 57264 (387%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the max amount of data (measured in megabytes per second) that can be moved past the external memory interface in one second. It is worked out by multiplying the card's interface width by its memory speed. In the case of DDR type RAM, the result should be multiplied by 2 again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The higher the card's memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, High Dynamic Range and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that can be processed per second. This number is worked out by multiplying the total number of texture units by the core clock speed of the chip. The higher this number, the better the video card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels the graphics card could possibly write to the local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is calculated by multiplying the number of Render Output Units by the clock speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel output rate also depends on quite a few other factors, especially the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to get to the max fill rate.
