GeForce GTX 965M vs Radeon R5 M255

Intro

The GeForce GTX 965M features clock speeds of 944 MHz on the GPU, and 1000 MHz on the 2048 MB of GDDR5 RAM. It features 1024 SPUs as well as 64 TAUs and 32 ROPs.

Compare those specs to the Radeon R5 M255, which comes with clock speeds of 940 MHz on the GPU, and 1000 MHz on the 2048 MB of DDR3 memory. It features 320 SPUs along with 20 Texture Address Units and 8 Rasterization Operator Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

In theory, the GeForce GTX 965M should be 300% faster than the Radeon R5 M255 in general, because of its greater bandwidth. (explain)

GeForce GTX 965M 64000 MB/sec
Radeon R5 M255 16000 MB/sec
Difference: 48000 (300%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce GTX 965M is a lot (about 221%) better at AF than the Radeon R5 M255. (explain)

GeForce GTX 965M 60416 Mtexels/sec
Radeon R5 M255 18800 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 41616 (221%)

Pixel Rate

The GeForce GTX 965M should be much (more or less 302%) faster with regards to full screen anti-aliasing than the Radeon R5 M255, and also capable of handling higher screen resolutions while still performing well. (explain)

GeForce GTX 965M 30208 Mpixels/sec
Radeon R5 M255 7520 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 22688 (302%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the largest amount of data (measured in MB per second) that can be transferred past the external memory interface in a second. It is worked out by multiplying the card's interface width by its memory speed. If it uses DDR type memory, the result should be multiplied by 2 again. If DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The better the memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, High Dynamic Range and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that are processed per second. This figure is worked out by multiplying the total number of texture units by the core clock speed of the chip. The better the texel rate, the better the video card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels that the graphics card can possibly record to its local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is worked out by multiplying the number of Raster Operations Pipelines by the the card's clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel output rate also depends on quite a few other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the ability to get to the maximum fill rate.
