Radeon R7 370 2G vs Radeon R7 M360

Intro

The Radeon R7 370 2G features a clock speed of 975 MHz and a GDDR5 memory frequency of 1400 MHz. It also uses a 256-bit bus, and uses a 28 nm design. It features 1024 SPUs, 64 Texture Address Units, and 32 Raster Operation Units.

Compare those specs to the Radeon R7 M360, which has core clock speeds of 1125 MHz on the GPU, and 1000 MHz on the 2048 MB of DDR3 memory. It features 384 SPUs along with 24 Texture Address Units and 8 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

The Radeon R7 370 2G should in theory perform a lot faster than the Radeon R7 M360 in general. (explain)

Radeon R7 370 2G 179200 MB/sec
Radeon R7 M360 16000 MB/sec
Difference: 163200 (1020%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon R7 370 2G is quite a bit (more or less 131%) more effective at AF than the Radeon R7 M360. (explain)

Radeon R7 370 2G 62400 Mtexels/sec
Radeon R7 M360 27000 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 35400 (131%)

Pixel Rate

If using a high screen resolution is important to you, then the Radeon R7 370 2G is a better choice, by a large margin. (explain)

Radeon R7 370 2G 31200 Mpixels/sec
Radeon R7 M360 9000 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 22200 (247%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the max amount of information (in units of megabytes per second) that can be moved across the external memory interface in a second. It is worked out by multiplying the interface width by its memory speed. If the card has DDR type memory, the result should be multiplied by 2 once again. If DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The better the bandwidth is, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that are processed in one second. This figure is calculated by multiplying the total texture units by the core speed of the chip. The better the texel rate, the better the video card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels the video card could possibly write to the local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is worked out by multiplying the number of Render Output Units by the clock speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - sometimes also referred to as Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel fill rate is also dependant on quite a few other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to reach the maximum fill rate.
