Radeon R5 M330 vs Radeon R7 370 4G

Intro

The Radeon R5 M330 comes with a core clock speed of 1030 MHz and a DDR3 memory speed of 900 MHz. It also makes use of a 64-bit memory bus, and makes use of a 28 nm design. It features 320 SPUs, 20 Texture Address Units, and 8 ROPs.

Compare all of that to the Radeon R7 370 4G, which has a core clock speed of 975 MHz and a GDDR5 memory frequency of 1400 MHz. It also uses a 256-bit bus, and uses a 28 nm design. It is made up of 1024 SPUs, 64 Texture Address Units, and 32 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

The Radeon R7 370 4G should theoretically perform a lot faster than the Radeon R5 M330 overall. (explain)

Radeon R7 370 4G 179200 MB/sec
Radeon R5 M330 14400 MB/sec
Difference: 164800 (1144%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon R7 370 4G will be a lot (more or less 203%) better at AF than the Radeon R5 M330. (explain)

Radeon R7 370 4G 62400 Mtexels/sec
Radeon R5 M330 20600 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 41800 (203%)

Pixel Rate

If using a high screen resolution is important to you, then the Radeon R7 370 4G is superior to the Radeon R5 M330, and very much so. (explain)

Radeon R7 370 4G 31200 Mpixels/sec
Radeon R5 M330 8240 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 22960 (279%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the max amount of data (measured in MB per second) that can be moved past the external memory interface within a second. It's worked out by multiplying the bus width by the speed of its memory. If it uses DDR type memory, the result should be multiplied by 2 once again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The higher the bandwidth is, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, High Dynamic Range and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that are applied in one second. This number is worked out by multiplying the total number of texture units by the core clock speed of the chip. The better the texel rate, the better the card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels the graphics card can possibly write to the local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is calculated by multiplying the amount of Raster Operations Pipelines by the the card's clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel output rate is also dependant on many other factors, especially the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the potential to reach the max fill rate.
