GeForce 830M vs Radeon HD 5670

Intro

The GeForce 830M has a GPU core clock speed of 1029 MHz, and the 2048 MB of DDR3 memory runs at 900 MHz through a 64-bit bus. It also features 256 Stream Processors, 16 TAUs, and 8 Raster Operation Units.

Compare all that to the Radeon HD 5670, which comes with GPU core speed of 775 MHz, and 1024 MB of GDDR5 memory set to run at 1000 MHz through a 128-bit bus. It also is made up of 400(80x5) SPUs, 20 Texture Address Units, and 8 ROPs.

Memory Bandwidth

As far as performance goes, the Radeon HD 5670 should theoretically be much superior to the GeForce 830M overall. (explain)

Radeon HD 5670 64000 MB/sec
GeForce 830M 14400 MB/sec
Difference: 49600 (344%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce 830M is a bit (more or less 6%) faster with regards to anisotropic filtering than the Radeon HD 5670. (explain)

GeForce 830M 16464 Mtexels/sec
Radeon HD 5670 15500 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 964 (6%)

Pixel Rate

The GeForce 830M is a lot (approximately 33%) faster with regards to FSAA than the Radeon HD 5670, and also will be capable of handling higher resolutions without slowing down too much. (explain)

GeForce 830M 8232 Mpixels/sec
Radeon HD 5670 6200 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 2032 (33%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the max amount of information (counted in MB per second) that can be transported over the external memory interface within a second. It's worked out by multiplying the card's bus width by its memory clock speed. In the case of DDR memory, the result should be multiplied by 2 once again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The better the bandwidth is, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, High Dynamic Range and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that are applied in one second. This figure is worked out by multiplying the total amount of texture units of the card by the core clock speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels that the graphics card can possibly record to its local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is worked out by multiplying the number of Raster Operations Pipelines by the clock speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - aka Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel rate is also dependant on many other factors, especially the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the ability to get to the max fill rate.
