GeForce GTX 950M vs Radeon HD 6870

Intro

The GeForce GTX 950M comes with a clock speed of 914 MHz and a DDR3 memory frequency of 1000 MHz. It also makes use of a 128-bit memory bus, and makes use of a 28 nm design. It is comprised of 640 SPUs, 40 Texture Address Units, and 16 ROPs.

Compare those specs to the Radeon HD 6870, which comes with GPU core speed of 900 MHz, and 1024 MB of GDDR5 RAM running at 1050 MHz through a 256-bit bus. It also features 1120 SPUs, 56 Texture Address Units, and 32 ROPs.

Memory Bandwidth

In theory, the Radeon HD 6870 should be 320% quicker than the GeForce GTX 950M in general, due to its higher data rate. (explain)

Radeon HD 6870 134400 MB/sec
GeForce GTX 950M 32000 MB/sec
Difference: 102400 (320%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon HD 6870 will be much (about 38%) better at anisotropic filtering than the GeForce GTX 950M. (explain)

Radeon HD 6870 50400 Mtexels/sec
GeForce GTX 950M 36560 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 13840 (38%)

Pixel Rate

The Radeon HD 6870 should be quite a bit (more or less 97%) more effective at FSAA than the GeForce GTX 950M, and capable of handling higher resolutions without losing too much performance. (explain)

Radeon HD 6870 28800 Mpixels/sec
GeForce GTX 950M 14624 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 14176 (97%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the max amount of information (measured in MB per second) that can be transferred over the external memory interface within a second. It is calculated by multiplying the interface width by its memory clock speed. If the card has DDR RAM, it should be multiplied by 2 again. If DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The better the card's memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, High Dynamic Range and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that are processed per second. This is worked out by multiplying the total texture units by the core clock speed of the chip. The better the texel rate, the better the card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels that the graphics chip can possibly record to its local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is worked out by multiplying the number of Raster Operations Pipelines by the the card's clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - aka Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel output rate is also dependant on lots of other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the potential to reach the maximum fill rate.
