GeForce 830M vs Radeon R7 M265

Intro

The GeForce 830M features a GPU core clock speed of 1029 MHz, and the 2048 MB of DDR3 RAM runs at 900 MHz through a 64-bit bus. It also features 256 Stream Processors, 16 TAUs, and 8 ROPs.

Compare all that to the Radeon R7 M265, which makes use of a 28 nm design. AMD has clocked the core frequency at 725 MHz. The DDR3 RAM is set to run at a frequency of 1000 MHz on this particular card. It features 384 SPUs as well as 24 Texture Address Units and 8 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

The Radeon R7 M265 should theoretically be a lot faster than the GeForce 830M in general. (explain)

Radeon R7 M265 32000 MB/sec
GeForce 830M 14400 MB/sec
Difference: 17600 (122%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon R7 M265 is a little bit (about 6%) more effective at AF than the GeForce 830M. (explain)

Radeon R7 M265 17400 Mtexels/sec
GeForce 830M 16464 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 936 (6%)

Pixel Rate

If using a high screen resolution is important to you, then the GeForce 830M is a better choice, and very much so. (explain)

GeForce 830M 8232 Mpixels/sec
Radeon R7 M265 5800 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 2432 (42%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the max amount of information (measured in megabytes per second) that can be transported past the external memory interface in one second. The number is worked out by multiplying the interface width by the speed of its memory. In the case of DDR memory, the result should be multiplied by 2 once again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The higher the memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, High Dynamic Range and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that are processed per second. This is worked out by multiplying the total number of texture units by the core speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels the graphics card could possibly write to its local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is worked out by multiplying the amount of Raster Operations Pipelines by the clock speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel fill rate is also dependant on many other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the potential to reach the max fill rate.
