GeForce 820M vs Radeon HD 4730

Intro

The GeForce 820M has a GPU clock speed of 719 MHz, and the 2048 MB of DDR3 RAM runs at 1000 MHz through a 64-bit bus. It also features 96 SPUs, 16 TAUs, and 4 ROPs.

Compare that to the Radeon HD 4730, which has core speeds of 700 MHz on the GPU, and 900 MHz on the 512 MB of GDDR5 RAM. It features 640(128x5) SPUs as well as 32 TAUs and 8 ROPs.

GeForce 820M 15 Watts
Radeon HD 4730 140 Watts
Difference: 125 Watts (833%)

Memory Bandwidth

The Radeon HD 4730, in theory, should perform a lot faster than the GeForce 820M overall. (explain)

Radeon HD 4730 57600 MB/sec
GeForce 820M 16000 MB/sec
Difference: 41600 (260%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon HD 4730 will be quite a bit (about 95%) more effective at AF than the GeForce 820M. (explain)

Radeon HD 4730 22400 Mtexels/sec
GeForce 820M 11504 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 10896 (95%)

Pixel Rate

The Radeon HD 4730 should be much (approximately 95%) faster with regards to AA than the GeForce 820M, and also able to handle higher resolutions while still performing well. (explain)

Radeon HD 4730 5600 Mpixels/sec
GeForce 820M 2876 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 2724 (95%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the max amount of data (measured in MB per second) that can be transported over the external memory interface in a second. It is worked out by multiplying the card's bus width by its memory speed. If the card has DDR memory, it should be multiplied by 2 once again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The better the memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, High Dynamic Range and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that can be applied per second. This is calculated by multiplying the total texture units by the core clock speed of the chip. The better this number, the better the graphics card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels that the graphics chip can possibly record to the local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is calculated by multiplying the number of ROPs by the the core speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel fill rate also depends on quite a few other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the ability to reach the maximum fill rate.
