GeForce 8800 GT 256MB vs Radeon R7 M260X

Intro

The GeForce 8800 GT 256MB uses a 65 nm design. nVidia has set the core frequency at 600 MHz. The GDDR3 memory is set to run at a frequency of 700 MHz on this particular model. It features 112 SPUs as well as 56 TAUs and 16 Rasterization Operator Units.

Compare all of that to the Radeon R7 M260X, which features core clock speeds of 825 MHz on the GPU, and 1000 MHz on the 2048 MB of GDDR5 RAM. It features 384 SPUs along with 24 TAUs and 8 Rasterization Operator Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

The Radeon R7 M260X, in theory, should be much faster than the GeForce 8800 GT 256MB overall. (explain)

Radeon R7 M260X 64000 MB/sec
GeForce 8800 GT 256MB 44800 MB/sec
Difference: 19200 (43%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce 8800 GT 256MB should be much (more or less 70%) more effective at texture filtering than the Radeon R7 M260X. (explain)

GeForce 8800 GT 256MB 33600 Mtexels/sec
Radeon R7 M260X 19800 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 13800 (70%)

Pixel Rate

The GeForce 8800 GT 256MB is a lot (about 45%) more effective at anti-aliasing than the Radeon R7 M260X, and also should be able to handle higher screen resolutions without losing too much performance. (explain)

GeForce 8800 GT 256MB 9600 Mpixels/sec
Radeon R7 M260X 6600 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 3000 (45%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the max amount of information (counted in MB per second) that can be transferred past the external memory interface in one second. It's calculated by multiplying the card's interface width by its memory speed. If the card has DDR type RAM, the result should be multiplied by 2 once again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The better the card's memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, HDR and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that are processed per second. This figure is calculated by multiplying the total number of texture units by the core clock speed of the chip. The higher this number, the better the video card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels the video card can possibly record to the local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is worked out by multiplying the amount of colour ROPs by the the core speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - sometimes also referred to as Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel output rate also depends on many other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to get to the maximum fill rate.
