GeForce 8800 GTS (G80) 640MB vs GeForce GTX 860M

Intro

The GeForce 8800 GTS (G80) 640MB features clock speeds of 513 MHz on the GPU, and 792 MHz on the 640 MB of GDDR3 memory. It features 96 SPUs along with 48 Texture Address Units and 20 ROPs.

Compare those specs to the GeForce GTX 860M, which uses a 28 nm design. nVidia has clocked the core frequency at 797 MHz. The GDDR5 RAM is set to run at a frequency of 1000 MHz on this specific model. It features 1152 SPUs as well as 96 TAUs and 16 Rasterization Operator Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

GeForce GTX 860M 45 Watts
GeForce 8800 GTS (G80) 640MB 143 Watts
Difference: 98 Watts (218%)

Memory Bandwidth

Performance-wise, the GeForce GTX 860M should in theory be a small bit superior to the GeForce 8800 GTS (G80) 640MB in general. (explain)

GeForce GTX 860M 64000 MB/sec
GeForce 8800 GTS (G80) 640MB 63360 MB/sec
Difference: 640 (1%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce GTX 860M is much (more or less 211%) more effective at anisotropic filtering than the GeForce 8800 GTS (G80) 640MB. (explain)

GeForce GTX 860M 76512 Mtexels/sec
GeForce 8800 GTS (G80) 640MB 24624 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 51888 (211%)

Pixel Rate

The GeForce GTX 860M will be a lot (approximately 24%) better at FSAA than the GeForce 8800 GTS (G80) 640MB, and also will be able to handle higher resolutions better. (explain)

GeForce GTX 860M 12752 Mpixels/sec
GeForce 8800 GTS (G80) 640MB 10260 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 2492 (24%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the max amount of information (in units of MB per second) that can be moved past the external memory interface in one second. The number is calculated by multiplying the card's bus width by its memory clock speed. If the card has DDR RAM, it must be multiplied by 2 again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The higher the card's memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that can be processed in one second. This number is calculated by multiplying the total texture units by the core speed of the chip. The better this number, the better the video card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels the video card can possibly record to its local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is worked out by multiplying the number of ROPs by the the card's clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel output rate is also dependant on quite a few other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the potential to get to the maximum fill rate.
