Radeon HD 3690/3830 vs Radeon R7 M260X

Intro

The Radeon HD 3690/3830 uses a 55 nm design. AMD has set the core speed at 668 MHz. The GDDR3 memory works at a speed of 828 MHz on this particular card. It features 320(64x5) SPUs as well as 16 Texture Address Units and 16 ROPs.

Compare those specs to the Radeon R7 M260X, which comes with a clock speed of 825 MHz and a GDDR5 memory speed of 1000 MHz. It also makes use of a 128-bit bus, and makes use of a 28 nm design. It is made up of 384 SPUs, 24 Texture Address Units, and 8 Raster Operation Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

As far as performance goes, the Radeon R7 M260X should theoretically be quite a bit better than the Radeon HD 3690/3830 in general. (explain)

Radeon R7 M260X 64000 MB/sec
Radeon HD 3690/3830 26496 MB/sec
Difference: 37504 (142%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon R7 M260X will be quite a bit (about 85%) faster with regards to AF than the Radeon HD 3690/3830. (explain)

Radeon R7 M260X 19800 Mtexels/sec
Radeon HD 3690/3830 10688 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 9112 (85%)

Pixel Rate

The Radeon HD 3690/3830 is much (approximately 62%) more effective at FSAA than the Radeon R7 M260X, and should be capable of handling higher screen resolutions better. (explain)

Radeon HD 3690/3830 10688 Mpixels/sec
Radeon R7 M260X 6600 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 4088 (62%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the maximum amount of information (in units of megabytes per second) that can be moved over the external memory interface in one second. The number is worked out by multiplying the interface width by the speed of its memory. If the card has DDR memory, it should be multiplied by 2 once again. If DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The better the bandwidth is, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, High Dynamic Range and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that are applied in one second. This figure is worked out by multiplying the total number of texture units by the core clock speed of the chip. The better the texel rate, the better the graphics card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels the graphics card can possibly record to the local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is calculated by multiplying the number of Render Output Units by the clock speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - aka Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel output rate is also dependant on quite a few other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to reach the max fill rate.
