GeForce GTS 450 1GB vs Radeon R5 M255

Intro

The GeForce GTS 450 1GB comes with a core clock frequency of 783 MHz and a GDDR5 memory speed of 902 MHz. It also makes use of a 128-bit bus, and makes use of a 40 nm design. It features 192 SPUs, 32 Texture Address Units, and 16 ROPs.

Compare those specs to the Radeon R5 M255, which features a GPU core clock speed of 940 MHz, and 2048 MB of DDR3 RAM set to run at 1000 MHz through a 64-bit bus. It also is comprised of 320 Stream Processors, 20 Texture Address Units, and 8 Raster Operation Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

In theory, the GeForce GTS 450 1GB should be 261% quicker than the Radeon R5 M255 in general, because of its greater bandwidth. (explain)

GeForce GTS 450 1GB 57728 MB/sec
Radeon R5 M255 16000 MB/sec
Difference: 41728 (261%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce GTS 450 1GB will be much (approximately 33%) better at AF than the Radeon R5 M255. (explain)

GeForce GTS 450 1GB 25056 Mtexels/sec
Radeon R5 M255 18800 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 6256 (33%)

Pixel Rate

If using lots of anti-aliasing is important to you, then the GeForce GTS 450 1GB is the winner, and very much so. (explain)

GeForce GTS 450 1GB 12528 Mpixels/sec
Radeon R5 M255 7520 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 5008 (67%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the largest amount of data (in units of megabytes per second) that can be transported across the external memory interface within a second. It's worked out by multiplying the card's interface width by its memory speed. If it uses DDR type RAM, it should be multiplied by 2 once again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The better the memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, High Dynamic Range and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that can be applied per second. This figure is calculated by multiplying the total texture units by the core speed of the chip. The better this number, the better the video card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels the graphics card could possibly write to the local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is worked out by multiplying the amount of Raster Operations Pipelines by the the core speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel rate is also dependant on lots of other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the potential to reach the max fill rate.
