GeForce GTS 450 1GB vs Radeon R5 M255

Intro

The GeForce GTS 450 1GB has core clock speeds of 783 MHz on the GPU, and 902 MHz on the 1024 MB of GDDR5 RAM. It features 192 SPUs as well as 32 Texture Address Units and 16 ROPs.

Compare those specifications to the Radeon R5 M255, which uses a 28 nm design. AMD has set the core speed at 940 MHz. The DDR3 RAM runs at a frequency of 1000 MHz on this model. It features 320 SPUs along with 20 Texture Address Units and 8 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

As far as performance goes, the GeForce GTS 450 1GB should theoretically be much better than the Radeon R5 M255 in general. (explain)

GeForce GTS 450 1GB 57728 MB/sec
Radeon R5 M255 16000 MB/sec
Difference: 41728 (261%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce GTS 450 1GB is a lot (about 33%) better at texture filtering than the Radeon R5 M255. (explain)

GeForce GTS 450 1GB 25056 Mtexels/sec
Radeon R5 M255 18800 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 6256 (33%)

Pixel Rate

If running with a high resolution is important to you, then the GeForce GTS 450 1GB is a better choice, by a large margin. (explain)

GeForce GTS 450 1GB 12528 Mpixels/sec
Radeon R5 M255 7520 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 5008 (67%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the largest amount of information (measured in MB per second) that can be transported past the external memory interface in one second. The number is calculated by multiplying the interface width by its memory speed. If the card has DDR type RAM, it must be multiplied by 2 again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The higher the card's memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that can be applied per second. This figure is worked out by multiplying the total texture units of the card by the core speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the graphics card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels that the graphics card can possibly write to its local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is calculated by multiplying the amount of colour ROPs by the clock speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - aka Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel fill rate also depends on many other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to reach the maximum fill rate.
