Radeon HD 6770 1GB vs Radeon R9 M365X

Intro

The Radeon HD 6770 1GB uses a 40 nm design. AMD has set the core frequency at 900 MHz. The GDDR5 RAM runs at a speed of 1050 MHz on this card. It features 800 SPUs along with 40 TAUs and 16 Rasterization Operator Units.

Compare those specs to the Radeon R9 M365X, which uses a 28 nm design. AMD has clocked the core speed at 925 MHz. The GDDR5 memory works at a frequency of 1125 MHz on this particular model. It features 640 SPUs as well as 40 Texture Address Units and 16 Rasterization Operator Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

In theory, the Radeon R9 M365X should be a little bit faster than the Radeon HD 6770 1GB in general. (explain)

Radeon R9 M365X 72000 MB/sec
Radeon HD 6770 1GB 67200 MB/sec
Difference: 4800 (7%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon R9 M365X will be a bit (about 3%) more effective at texture filtering than the Radeon HD 6770 1GB. (explain)

Radeon R9 M365X 37000 Mtexels/sec
Radeon HD 6770 1GB 36000 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 1000 (3%)

Pixel Rate

The Radeon R9 M365X should be a small bit (approximately 3%) faster with regards to AA than the Radeon HD 6770 1GB, and also will be able to handle higher resolutions better. (explain)

Radeon R9 M365X 14800 Mpixels/sec
Radeon HD 6770 1GB 14400 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 400 (3%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the maximum amount of information (measured in megabytes per second) that can be transferred across the external memory interface within a second. The number is worked out by multiplying the interface width by its memory clock speed. If the card has DDR RAM, the result should be multiplied by 2 once again. If DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The higher the card's memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, High Dynamic Range and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that are processed in one second. This figure is calculated by multiplying the total number of texture units of the card by the core speed of the chip. The better the texel rate, the better the card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels the graphics card can possibly record to its local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is worked out by multiplying the number of Raster Operations Pipelines by the the core speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel output rate also depends on many other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the potential to reach the maximum fill rate.
