GeForce 8800 GTS (G92) vs GeForce 940M

Intro

The GeForce 8800 GTS (G92) has a GPU core speed of 650 MHz, and the 512 MB of GDDR3 memory runs at 970 MHz through a 256-bit bus. It also features 128 Stream Processors, 64 TAUs, and 16 ROPs.

Compare all that to the GeForce 940M, which comes with clock speeds of 1072 MHz on the GPU, and 1000 MHz on the 2048 MB of DDR3 RAM. It features 384 SPUs as well as 24 Texture Address Units and 8 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

In theory, the GeForce 8800 GTS (G92) should perform quite a bit faster than the GeForce 940M overall. (explain)

GeForce 8800 GTS (G92) 62080 MB/sec
GeForce 940M 16000 MB/sec
Difference: 46080 (288%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce 8800 GTS (G92) is a lot (approximately 62%) better at texture filtering than the GeForce 940M. (explain)

GeForce 8800 GTS (G92) 41600 Mtexels/sec
GeForce 940M 25728 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 15872 (62%)

Pixel Rate

If using a high resolution is important to you, then the GeForce 8800 GTS (G92) is superior to the GeForce 940M, by a large margin. (explain)

GeForce 8800 GTS (G92) 10400 Mpixels/sec
GeForce 940M 8576 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 1824 (21%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the largest amount of information (measured in megabytes per second) that can be transported over the external memory interface within a second. It's calculated by multiplying the card's interface width by its memory clock speed. If the card has DDR type RAM, it must be multiplied by 2 again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The higher the bandwidth is, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, High Dynamic Range and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that can be processed per second. This number is calculated by multiplying the total number of texture units by the core speed of the chip. The better this number, the better the video card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels that the graphics card could possibly write to its local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is calculated by multiplying the amount of Render Output Units by the clock speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel output rate is also dependant on many other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the ability to reach the max fill rate.
