GeForce 930M vs Radeon R7 370 2G

Intro

The GeForce 930M features a GPU core clock speed of 928 MHz, and the 2048 MB of DDR3 RAM is set to run at 900 MHz through a 64-bit bus. It also is made up of 384 SPUs, 24 TAUs, and 8 Raster Operation Units.

Compare those specs to the Radeon R7 370 2G, which comes with clock speeds of 975 MHz on the GPU, and 1400 MHz on the 2048 MB of GDDR5 memory. It features 1024 SPUs as well as 64 TAUs and 32 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

As far as performance goes, the Radeon R7 370 2G should theoretically be a lot better than the GeForce 930M in general. (explain)

Radeon R7 370 2G 179200 MB/sec
GeForce 930M 14400 MB/sec
Difference: 164800 (1144%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon R7 370 2G will be quite a bit (more or less 180%) more effective at AF than the GeForce 930M. (explain)

Radeon R7 370 2G 62400 Mtexels/sec
GeForce 930M 22272 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 40128 (180%)

Pixel Rate

If running with lots of anti-aliasing is important to you, then the Radeon R7 370 2G is superior to the GeForce 930M, by a large margin. (explain)

Radeon R7 370 2G 31200 Mpixels/sec
GeForce 930M 7424 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 23776 (320%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the max amount of data (measured in MB per second) that can be transferred across the external memory interface within a second. It's worked out by multiplying the card's bus width by its memory clock speed. In the case of DDR memory, it should be multiplied by 2 once again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The better the card's memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, High Dynamic Range and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that are processed per second. This number is calculated by multiplying the total number of texture units of the card by the core clock speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the video card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels the video card could possibly write to its local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is worked out by multiplying the amount of Raster Operations Pipelines by the the card's clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - sometimes also referred to as Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel output rate is also dependant on many other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the ability to get to the max fill rate.
