GeForce GTX Titan Black vs Radeon HD 5670

Intro

The GeForce GTX Titan Black uses a 28 nm design. nVidia has clocked the core frequency at 889 MHz. The GDDR5 memory works at a speed of 1750 MHz on this model. It features 2880 SPUs as well as 240 TAUs and 48 ROPs.

Compare those specs to the Radeon HD 5670, which features a clock speed of 775 MHz and a GDDR5 memory frequency of 1000 MHz. It also uses a 128-bit bus, and makes use of a 40 nm design. It is comprised of 400(80x5) SPUs, 20 TAUs, and 8 ROPs.

GeForce GTX Titan Black 336000 MB/sec
Radeon HD 5670 64000 MB/sec
Difference: 272000 (425%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce GTX Titan Black should be a lot (about 1277%) better at anisotropic filtering than the Radeon HD 5670. (explain)

GeForce GTX Titan Black 213360 Mtexels/sec
Radeon HD 5670 15500 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 197860 (1277%)

Pixel Rate

The GeForce GTX Titan Black will be quite a bit (more or less 588%) more effective at anti-aliasing than the Radeon HD 5670, and also will be capable of handling higher resolutions while still performing well. (explain)

GeForce GTX Titan Black 42672 Mpixels/sec
Radeon HD 5670 6200 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 36472 (588%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the maximum amount of information (in units of MB per second) that can be transferred past the external memory interface in one second. The number is calculated by multiplying the card's interface width by its memory speed. In the case of DDR type memory, it must be multiplied by 2 once again. If DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The higher the memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, HDR and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that can be applied in one second. This is worked out by multiplying the total amount of texture units by the core speed of the chip. The better this number, the better the graphics card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels the graphics card can possibly record to the local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is calculated by multiplying the number of Raster Operations Pipelines by the the core speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - sometimes also referred to as Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel fill rate also depends on many other factors, especially the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the ability to get to the maximum fill rate.
