GeForce 8800 GT 512MB vs Geforce GTX 760

Intro

The GeForce 8800 GT 512MB uses a 65 nm design. nVidia has clocked the core speed at 600 MHz. The GDDR3 RAM runs at a frequency of 900 MHz on this card. It features 112 SPUs as well as 56 TAUs and 16 ROPs.

Compare all of that to the Geforce GTX 760, which features core speeds of 980 MHz on the GPU, and 1502 MHz on the 2048 MB of GDDR5 RAM. It features 1152 SPUs as well as 96 TAUs and 32 ROPs.

GeForce 8800 GT 512MB 105 Watts
Geforce GTX 760 170 Watts
Difference: 65 Watts (62%)

Memory Bandwidth

As far as performance goes, the Geforce GTX 760 should theoretically be quite a bit superior to the GeForce 8800 GT 512MB overall. (explain)

Geforce GTX 760 192256 MB/sec
GeForce 8800 GT 512MB 57600 MB/sec
Difference: 134656 (234%)

Texel Rate

The Geforce GTX 760 should be much (approximately 180%) more effective at AF than the GeForce 8800 GT 512MB. (explain)

Geforce GTX 760 94080 Mtexels/sec
GeForce 8800 GT 512MB 33600 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 60480 (180%)

Pixel Rate

The Geforce GTX 760 will be quite a bit (about 227%) better at FSAA than the GeForce 8800 GT 512MB, and should be capable of handling higher resolutions more effectively. (explain)

Geforce GTX 760 31360 Mpixels/sec
GeForce 8800 GT 512MB 9600 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 21760 (227%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the maximum amount of data (counted in MB per second) that can be moved over the external memory interface in one second. It's calculated by multiplying the interface width by the speed of its memory. In the case of DDR type RAM, it must be multiplied by 2 again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The higher the memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, HDR and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that are applied in one second. This figure is worked out by multiplying the total texture units by the core speed of the chip. The higher this number, the better the graphics card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels the video card can possibly write to its local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is worked out by multiplying the number of ROPs by the the core clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel fill rate also depends on lots of other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the potential to get to the maximum fill rate.
