GeForce GTX 275 vs Radeon HD 6450 (OEM) 1GB

Intro

The GeForce GTX 275 features a GPU core speed of 633 MHz, and the 896 MB of GDDR3 memory runs at 1134 MHz through a 448-bit bus. It also is comprised of 240 SPUs, 80 TAUs, and 28 ROPs.

Compare those specifications to the Radeon HD 6450 (OEM) 1GB, which has GPU core speed of 750 MHz, and 1024 MB of GDDR5 RAM running at 900 MHz through a 64-bit bus. It also is made up of 160 SPUs, 8 TAUs, and 4 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

Radeon HD 6450 (OEM) 1GB 31 Watts
GeForce GTX 275 219 Watts
Difference: 188 Watts (606%)

Memory Bandwidth

Theoretically speaking, the GeForce GTX 275 is 341% faster than the Radeon HD 6450 (OEM) 1GB overall, due to its greater data rate. (explain)

GeForce GTX 275 127008 MB/sec
Radeon HD 6450 (OEM) 1GB 28800 MB/sec
Difference: 98208 (341%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce GTX 275 will be quite a bit (more or less 744%) more effective at AF than the Radeon HD 6450 (OEM) 1GB. (explain)

GeForce GTX 275 50640 Mtexels/sec
Radeon HD 6450 (OEM) 1GB 6000 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 44640 (744%)

Pixel Rate

The GeForce GTX 275 should be much (more or less 491%) better at AA than the Radeon HD 6450 (OEM) 1GB, and also will be able to handle higher screen resolutions without slowing down too much. (explain)

GeForce GTX 275 17724 Mpixels/sec
Radeon HD 6450 (OEM) 1GB 3000 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 14724 (491%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the max amount of information (counted in megabytes per second) that can be moved past the external memory interface in a second. It's calculated by multiplying the card's interface width by its memory speed. In the case of DDR type memory, the result should be multiplied by 2 once again. If DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The better the bandwidth is, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, High Dynamic Range and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that are applied in one second. This figure is calculated by multiplying the total texture units of the card by the core speed of the chip. The better this number, the better the card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels that the graphics chip could possibly write to the local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is worked out by multiplying the number of ROPs by the the core speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - sometimes also referred to as Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel output rate also depends on lots of other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the potential to reach the max fill rate.
