GeForce 9600 GT 512MB vs GeForce GT 220 GDDR3

Intro

The GeForce 9600 GT 512MB comes with core speeds of 650 MHz on the GPU, and 900 MHz on the 512 MB of GDDR3 RAM. It features 64 SPUs as well as 32 Texture Address Units and 16 ROPs.

Compare all of that to the GeForce GT 220 GDDR3, which comes with GPU clock speed of 625 MHz, and 512 MB of GDDR3 memory running at 1012 MHz through a 128-bit bus. It also is made up of 48 SPUs, 16 TAUs, and 8 Raster Operation Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

GeForce GT 220 GDDR3 58 Watts
GeForce 9600 GT 512MB 95 Watts
Difference: 37 Watts (64%)

Memory Bandwidth

As far as performance goes, the GeForce 9600 GT 512MB should theoretically be quite a bit superior to the GeForce GT 220 GDDR3 overall. (explain)

GeForce 9600 GT 512MB 57600 MB/sec
GeForce GT 220 GDDR3 32384 MB/sec
Difference: 25216 (78%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce 9600 GT 512MB should be quite a bit (more or less 108%) better at texture filtering than the GeForce GT 220 GDDR3. (explain)

GeForce 9600 GT 512MB 20800 Mtexels/sec
GeForce GT 220 GDDR3 10000 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 10800 (108%)

Pixel Rate

If running with high levels of AA is important to you, then the GeForce 9600 GT 512MB is superior to the GeForce GT 220 GDDR3, and very much so. (explain)

GeForce 9600 GT 512MB 10400 Mpixels/sec
GeForce GT 220 GDDR3 5000 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 5400 (108%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the max amount of data (in units of megabytes per second) that can be transported across the external memory interface in one second. It's worked out by multiplying the card's interface width by the speed of its memory. In the case of DDR memory, the result should be multiplied by 2 again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The better the card's memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, High Dynamic Range and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that can be processed in one second. This number is calculated by multiplying the total number of texture units by the core clock speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels the video card could possibly record to the local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is calculated by multiplying the number of ROPs by the the core clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel output rate is also dependant on lots of other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the potential to get to the maximum fill rate.
