GeForce GTX 465 vs GeForce GTX 580 3GB

Intro

The GeForce GTX 465 uses a 40 nm design. nVidia has clocked the core speed at 607 MHz. The GDDR5 RAM works at a speed of 802 MHz on this specific card. It features 352 SPUs as well as 44 TAUs and 32 ROPs.

Compare all that to the GeForce GTX 580 3GB, which features core speeds of 772 MHz on the GPU, and 1002 MHz on the 3072 MB of GDDR5 memory. It features 512 SPUs along with 64 Texture Address Units and 48 ROPs.

GeForce GTX 465 102592 MB/sec
Difference: 89792 (88%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce GTX 580 3GB will be a lot (more or less 85%) faster with regards to texture filtering than the GeForce GTX 465. (explain)

GeForce GTX 580 3GB 49408 Mtexels/sec
GeForce GTX 465 26708 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 22700 (85%)

Pixel Rate

The GeForce GTX 580 3GB will be much (about 91%) more effective at AA than the GeForce GTX 465, and also capable of handling higher resolutions more effectively. (explain)

GeForce GTX 580 3GB 37056 Mpixels/sec
GeForce GTX 465 19424 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 17632 (91%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the maximum amount of data (in units of MB per second) that can be transported past the external memory interface within a second. It is calculated by multiplying the card's interface width by the speed of its memory. If the card has DDR type RAM, the result should be multiplied by 2 again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The higher the bandwidth is, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that can be applied per second. This figure is worked out by multiplying the total amount of texture units by the core clock speed of the chip. The better this number, the better the video card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels that the graphics card can possibly record to the local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is calculated by multiplying the amount of Render Output Units by the clock speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel output rate is also dependant on many other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to get to the max fill rate.
