GeForce 8800 GS vs GeForce GTX 570

Intro

The GeForce 8800 GS features a GPU core clock speed of 550 MHz, and the 384 MB of GDDR3 RAM runs at 800 MHz through a 192-bit bus. It also is comprised of 96 SPUs, 48 TAUs, and 12 Raster Operation Units.

Compare those specifications to the GeForce GTX 570, which has GPU clock speed of 732 MHz, and 1280 MB of GDDR5 RAM set to run at 950 MHz through a 320-bit bus. It also is made up of 480 SPUs, 60 TAUs, and 40 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

GeForce 8800 GS 105 Watts
GeForce GTX 570 219 Watts
Difference: 114 Watts (109%)

Memory Bandwidth

In theory, the GeForce GTX 570 should be 296% quicker than the GeForce 8800 GS overall, because of its higher data rate. (explain)

GeForce GTX 570 152000 MB/sec
GeForce 8800 GS 38400 MB/sec
Difference: 113600 (296%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce GTX 570 should be a lot (approximately 66%) faster with regards to AF than the GeForce 8800 GS. (explain)

GeForce GTX 570 43920 Mtexels/sec
GeForce 8800 GS 26400 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 17520 (66%)

Pixel Rate

The GeForce GTX 570 is quite a bit (approximately 344%) more effective at anti-aliasing than the GeForce 8800 GS, and able to handle higher screen resolutions while still performing well. (explain)

GeForce GTX 570 29280 Mpixels/sec
GeForce 8800 GS 6600 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 22680 (344%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the max amount of information (in units of MB per second) that can be transferred over the external memory interface in one second. It is calculated by multiplying the card's interface width by the speed of its memory. In the case of DDR type RAM, it must be multiplied by 2 again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The higher the memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that are applied in one second. This figure is calculated by multiplying the total amount of texture units by the core clock speed of the chip. The better the texel rate, the better the video card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels the video card could possibly write to its local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is worked out by multiplying the number of colour ROPs by the the core speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel rate also depends on quite a few other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the potential to reach the maximum fill rate.
