GeForce 8600 GS (OEM) vs GeForce GTX 560 Ti

Intro

The GeForce 8600 GS (OEM) comes with a clock speed of 540 MHz and a DDR2 memory speed of 400 MHz. It also uses a 128-bit memory bus, and makes use of a 80 nm design. It is made up of 32 SPUs, 16 Texture Address Units, and 8 ROPs.

Compare those specs to the GeForce GTX 560 Ti, which features GPU clock speed of 822 MHz, and 1024 MB of GDDR5 memory running at 1002 MHz through a 256-bit bus. It also is made up of 384 Stream Processors, 64 Texture Address Units, and 32 Raster Operation Units.

GeForce 8600 GS (OEM) 47 Watts
GeForce GTX 560 Ti 170 Watts
Difference: 123 Watts (262%)

Memory Bandwidth

The GeForce GTX 560 Ti should theoretically perform quite a bit faster than the GeForce 8600 GS (OEM) in general. (explain)

GeForce GTX 560 Ti 128256 MB/sec
GeForce 8600 GS (OEM) 12800 MB/sec
Difference: 115456 (902%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce GTX 560 Ti is much (approximately 509%) more effective at anisotropic filtering than the GeForce 8600 GS (OEM). (explain)

GeForce GTX 560 Ti 52608 Mtexels/sec
GeForce 8600 GS (OEM) 8640 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 43968 (509%)

Pixel Rate

If running with a high screen resolution is important to you, then the GeForce GTX 560 Ti is the winner, by far. (explain)

GeForce GTX 560 Ti 26304 Mpixels/sec
GeForce 8600 GS (OEM) 4320 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 21984 (509%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the maximum amount of data (in units of megabytes per second) that can be transferred across the external memory interface in a second. The number is worked out by multiplying the card's interface width by the speed of its memory. In the case of DDR RAM, it should be multiplied by 2 again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The better the bandwidth is, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, HDR and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that are applied in one second. This figure is worked out by multiplying the total number of texture units of the card by the core clock speed of the chip. The higher this number, the better the graphics card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels the video card can possibly write to the local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is calculated by multiplying the number of ROPs by the the core clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - aka Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel output rate is also dependant on many other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to reach the max fill rate.
