GeForce 9600 GSO 384MB vs GeForce GTX 560 Ti

Intro

The GeForce 9600 GSO 384MB makes use of a 65 nm design. nVidia has set the core frequency at 550 MHz. The GDDR3 memory is set to run at a frequency of 800 MHz on this particular card. It features 96 SPUs along with 48 TAUs and 12 ROPs.

Compare all that to the GeForce GTX 560 Ti, which comes with clock speeds of 822 MHz on the GPU, and 1002 MHz on the 1024 MB of GDDR5 memory. It features 384 SPUs along with 64 Texture Address Units and 32 Rasterization Operator Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

GeForce 9600 GSO 384MB 84 Watts
GeForce GTX 560 Ti 170 Watts
Difference: 86 Watts (102%)

Memory Bandwidth

In theory, the GeForce GTX 560 Ti should perform much faster than the GeForce 9600 GSO 384MB in general. (explain)

GeForce GTX 560 Ti 128256 MB/sec
GeForce 9600 GSO 384MB 38400 MB/sec
Difference: 89856 (234%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce GTX 560 Ti should be a lot (about 99%) more effective at AF than the GeForce 9600 GSO 384MB. (explain)

GeForce GTX 560 Ti 52608 Mtexels/sec
GeForce 9600 GSO 384MB 26400 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 26208 (99%)

Pixel Rate

If using a high resolution is important to you, then the GeForce GTX 560 Ti is the winner, by far. (explain)

GeForce GTX 560 Ti 26304 Mpixels/sec
GeForce 9600 GSO 384MB 6600 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 19704 (299%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the largest amount of data (measured in MB per second) that can be transported across the external memory interface in one second. It's worked out by multiplying the card's interface width by its memory clock speed. In the case of DDR RAM, the result should be multiplied by 2 once again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The higher the bandwidth is, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, High Dynamic Range and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that are processed in one second. This is worked out by multiplying the total texture units by the core clock speed of the chip. The higher this number, the better the card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels the video card can possibly write to the local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is worked out by multiplying the amount of ROPs by the the core clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - sometimes also referred to as Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel rate also depends on quite a few other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to get to the max fill rate.
