GeForce GTX 470 vs GeForce GTX 560 Ti

Intro

The GeForce GTX 470 features a GPU core clock speed of 607 MHz, and the 1280 MB of GDDR5 RAM is set to run at 837 MHz through a 320-bit bus. It also is comprised of 448 SPUs, 56 Texture Address Units, and 40 ROPs.

Compare that to the GeForce GTX 560 Ti, which has a clock frequency of 822 MHz and a GDDR5 memory frequency of 1002 MHz. It also makes use of a 256-bit bus, and uses a 40 nm design. It is comprised of 384 SPUs, 64 Texture Address Units, and 32 ROPs.

GeForce GTX 560 Ti 3466 points
GeForce GTX 470 2937 points
Difference: 529 (18%)

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

GeForce GTX 560 Ti 170 Watts
GeForce GTX 470 215 Watts
Difference: 45 Watts (26%)

Memory Bandwidth

The GeForce GTX 470 should theoretically perform a bit faster than the GeForce GTX 560 Ti overall. (explain)

GeForce GTX 470 133920 MB/sec
GeForce GTX 560 Ti 128256 MB/sec
Difference: 5664 (4%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce GTX 560 Ti should be much (approximately 55%) faster with regards to AF than the GeForce GTX 470. (explain)

GeForce GTX 560 Ti 52608 Mtexels/sec
GeForce GTX 470 33992 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 18616 (55%)

Pixel Rate

If running with high levels of AA is important to you, then the GeForce GTX 560 Ti is the winner, not by a very large margin though. (explain)

GeForce GTX 560 Ti 26304 Mpixels/sec
GeForce GTX 470 24280 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 2024 (8%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the largest amount of data (measured in megabytes per second) that can be transported over the external memory interface in one second. It is calculated by multiplying the interface width by its memory clock speed. In the case of DDR memory, it must be multiplied by 2 once again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The higher the card's memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, High Dynamic Range and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that can be processed per second. This number is worked out by multiplying the total amount of texture units by the core speed of the chip. The better the texel rate, the better the graphics card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels that the graphics card can possibly record to its local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is worked out by multiplying the amount of colour ROPs by the clock speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel fill rate is also dependant on quite a few other factors, especially the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the ability to get to the maximum fill rate.

The 560 Ti is clearly better in this comparison, but personally I'd go for a HD 6870, just because Radeons are better overall. 🙂
