GeForce GTS 450 1GB vs GeForce GTX 480

Intro

The GeForce GTS 450 1GB has a GPU clock speed of 783 MHz, and the 1024 MB of GDDR5 RAM runs at 902 MHz through a 128-bit bus. It also features 192 SPUs, 32 Texture Address Units, and 16 ROPs.

Compare those specs to the GeForce GTX 480, which has clock speeds of 700 MHz on the GPU, and 924 MHz on the 1536 MB of GDDR5 RAM. It features 480 SPUs along with 60 Texture Address Units and 48 ROPs.

GeForce GTS 450 1GB 106 Watts
GeForce GTX 480 250 Watts
Difference: 144 Watts (136%)

Memory Bandwidth

Performance-wise, the GeForce GTX 480 should theoretically be a lot superior to the GeForce GTS 450 1GB in general. (explain)

GeForce GTX 480 177408 MB/sec
GeForce GTS 450 1GB 57728 MB/sec
Difference: 119680 (207%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce GTX 480 should be quite a bit (more or less 68%) faster with regards to AF than the GeForce GTS 450 1GB. (explain)

GeForce GTX 480 42000 Mtexels/sec
GeForce GTS 450 1GB 25056 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 16944 (68%)

Pixel Rate

The GeForce GTX 480 should be much (about 168%) better at anti-aliasing than the GeForce GTS 450 1GB, and will be capable of handling higher screen resolutions without losing too much performance. (explain)

GeForce GTX 480 33600 Mpixels/sec
GeForce GTS 450 1GB 12528 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 21072 (168%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the largest amount of data (counted in MB per second) that can be moved across the external memory interface within a second. It's worked out by multiplying the interface width by its memory speed. If it uses DDR RAM, it should be multiplied by 2 once again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The better the bandwidth is, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, HDR and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that are applied in one second. This figure is worked out by multiplying the total texture units by the core speed of the chip. The higher this number, the better the graphics card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels the video card could possibly record to the local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is worked out by multiplying the amount of colour ROPs by the the core clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel fill rate also depends on lots of other factors, especially the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to reach the max fill rate.
