GeForce 8800 GT 1GB vs GeForce GTX 460 2GB

Intro

The GeForce 8800 GT 1GB features clock speeds of 600 MHz on the GPU, and 900 MHz on the 1024 MB of GDDR3 RAM. It features 112 SPUs as well as 56 TAUs and 16 Rasterization Operator Units.

Compare all of that to the GeForce GTX 460 2GB, which has GPU clock speed of 675 MHz, and 2048 MB of GDDR5 memory running at 900 MHz through a 256-bit bus. It also features 336 SPUs, 56 TAUs, and 32 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

GeForce 8800 GT 1GB 105 Watts
GeForce GTX 460 2GB 160 Watts
Difference: 55 Watts (52%)

Memory Bandwidth

Theoretically speaking, the GeForce GTX 460 2GB should be 100% quicker than the GeForce 8800 GT 1GB in general, because of its higher data rate. (explain)

GeForce GTX 460 2GB 115200 MB/sec
GeForce 8800 GT 1GB 57600 MB/sec
Difference: 57600 (100%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce GTX 460 2GB will be a bit (more or less 13%) faster with regards to texture filtering than the GeForce 8800 GT 1GB. (explain)

GeForce GTX 460 2GB 37800 Mtexels/sec
GeForce 8800 GT 1GB 33600 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 4200 (13%)

Pixel Rate

If using lots of anti-aliasing is important to you, then the GeForce GTX 460 2GB is a better choice, by far. (explain)

GeForce GTX 460 2GB 21600 Mpixels/sec
GeForce 8800 GT 1GB 9600 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 12000 (125%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the max amount of information (in units of MB per second) that can be transported across the external memory interface in a second. It's worked out by multiplying the bus width by its memory clock speed. If the card has DDR memory, it should be multiplied by 2 again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The higher the memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that are applied per second. This figure is worked out by multiplying the total number of texture units of the card by the core speed of the chip. The better the texel rate, the better the video card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels the graphics card could possibly write to its local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is worked out by multiplying the number of Raster Operations Pipelines by the the core speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - sometimes also referred to as Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel output rate is also dependant on many other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the ability to reach the maximum fill rate.
