GeForce GT 440 3GB vs GeForce GTX 460 2GB

Intro

The GeForce GT 440 3GB comes with a GPU core speed of 594 MHz, and the 3072 MB of GDDR3 memory runs at 900 MHz through a 192-bit bus. It also is comprised of 144 SPUs, 24 Texture Address Units, and 24 ROPs.

Compare those specifications to the GeForce GTX 460 2GB, which features GPU core speed of 675 MHz, and 2048 MB of GDDR5 memory set to run at 900 MHz through a 256-bit bus. It also features 336 Stream Processors, 56 TAUs, and 32 Raster Operation Units.

GeForce GT 440 3GB 56 Watts
GeForce GTX 460 2GB 160 Watts
Difference: 104 Watts (186%)

Memory Bandwidth

Theoretically, the GeForce GTX 460 2GB should be a lot faster than the GeForce GT 440 3GB in general. (explain)

GeForce GTX 460 2GB 115200 MB/sec
GeForce GT 440 3GB 43200 MB/sec
Difference: 72000 (167%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce GTX 460 2GB is quite a bit (more or less 165%) better at texture filtering than the GeForce GT 440 3GB. (explain)

GeForce GTX 460 2GB 37800 Mtexels/sec
GeForce GT 440 3GB 14256 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 23544 (165%)

Pixel Rate

The GeForce GTX 460 2GB should be much (approximately 52%) more effective at anti-aliasing than the GeForce GT 440 3GB, and also will be able to handle higher screen resolutions more effectively. (explain)

GeForce GTX 460 2GB 21600 Mpixels/sec
GeForce GT 440 3GB 14256 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 7344 (52%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the max amount of information (in units of megabytes per second) that can be transferred across the external memory interface in one second. It's calculated by multiplying the bus width by the speed of its memory. If the card has DDR type RAM, it must be multiplied by 2 once again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The higher the memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that can be processed in one second. This figure is worked out by multiplying the total texture units of the card by the core clock speed of the chip. The higher this number, the better the card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels that the graphics chip can possibly write to the local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is calculated by multiplying the amount of Raster Operations Pipelines by the the core speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel fill rate also depends on lots of other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to reach the max fill rate.
