GeForce 9600 GT 512MB vs GeForce GTX 460 (OEM)

Intro

The GeForce 9600 GT 512MB features a core clock frequency of 650 MHz and a GDDR3 memory speed of 900 MHz. It also features a 256-bit bus, and uses a 65/55 nm design. It features 64 SPUs, 32 TAUs, and 16 ROPs.

Compare those specs to the GeForce GTX 460 (OEM), which comes with GPU core speed of 650 MHz, and 1024 MB of GDDR5 RAM running at 850 MHz through a 256-bit bus. It also features 336 SPUs, 56 Texture Address Units, and 32 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

GeForce 9600 GT 512MB 95 Watts
GeForce GTX 460 (OEM) 150 Watts
Difference: 55 Watts (58%)

Memory Bandwidth

Theoretically, the GeForce GTX 460 (OEM) should perform much faster than the GeForce 9600 GT 512MB overall. (explain)

GeForce GTX 460 (OEM) 108800 MB/sec
GeForce 9600 GT 512MB 57600 MB/sec
Difference: 51200 (89%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce GTX 460 (OEM) should be quite a bit (approximately 75%) better at anisotropic filtering than the GeForce 9600 GT 512MB. (explain)

GeForce GTX 460 (OEM) 36400 Mtexels/sec
GeForce 9600 GT 512MB 20800 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 15600 (75%)

Pixel Rate

If using a high resolution is important to you, then the GeForce GTX 460 (OEM) is the winner, by far. (explain)

GeForce GTX 460 (OEM) 20800 Mpixels/sec
GeForce 9600 GT 512MB 10400 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 10400 (100%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the max amount of information (in units of megabytes per second) that can be transferred past the external memory interface in a second. It's worked out by multiplying the bus width by its memory clock speed. In the case of DDR RAM, it must be multiplied by 2 once again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The higher the bandwidth is, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that can be applied in one second. This number is worked out by multiplying the total number of texture units of the card by the core speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the graphics card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels that the graphics card can possibly record to the local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is calculated by multiplying the amount of Raster Operations Pipelines by the the card's clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - sometimes also referred to as Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel rate is also dependant on quite a few other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to reach the maximum fill rate.
