GeForce 9800 GT 512MB vs GeForce GTS 450 1GB

Intro

The GeForce 9800 GT 512MB has a core clock speed of 600 MHz and a GDDR3 memory speed of 900 MHz. It also features a 256-bit memory bus, and makes use of a 65/55 nm design. It is made up of 112 SPUs, 56 TAUs, and 16 ROPs.

Compare those specs to the GeForce GTS 450 1GB, which features core clock speeds of 783 MHz on the GPU, and 902 MHz on the 1024 MB of GDDR5 memory. It features 192 SPUs along with 32 Texture Address Units and 16 Rasterization Operator Units.

GeForce 9800 GT 512MB 105 Watts
GeForce GTS 450 1GB 106 Watts
Difference: 1 Watts (1%)

Memory Bandwidth

Theoretically speaking, the GeForce GTS 450 1GB should be a little bit faster than the GeForce 9800 GT 512MB in general. (explain)

GeForce GTS 450 1GB 57728 MB/sec
GeForce 9800 GT 512MB 57600 MB/sec
Difference: 128 (0%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce 9800 GT 512MB is a lot (about 34%) faster with regards to AF than the GeForce GTS 450 1GB. (explain)

GeForce 9800 GT 512MB 33600 Mtexels/sec
GeForce GTS 450 1GB 25056 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 8544 (34%)

Pixel Rate

If running with high levels of AA is important to you, then the GeForce GTS 450 1GB is the winner, by far. (explain)

GeForce GTS 450 1GB 12528 Mpixels/sec
GeForce 9800 GT 512MB 9600 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 2928 (31%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the maximum amount of information (in units of MB per second) that can be moved across the external memory interface in a second. It is calculated by multiplying the card's bus width by its memory clock speed. If it uses DDR memory, it must be multiplied by 2 again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The better the card's memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, High Dynamic Range and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that can be processed in one second. This is worked out by multiplying the total number of texture units by the core clock speed of the chip. The better the texel rate, the better the card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels that the graphics card can possibly write to the local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is calculated by multiplying the number of colour ROPs by the the core clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel fill rate is also dependant on lots of other factors, especially the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the ability to get to the max fill rate.
