GeForce GT 315 vs GeForce GTS 450 1GB

Intro

The GeForce GT 315 uses a 40 nm design. nVidia has clocked the core speed at 625 MHz. The DDR3 RAM works at a speed of 790 MHz on this particular model. It features 48 SPUs along with 16 Texture Address Units and 8 Rasterization Operator Units.

Compare that to the GeForce GTS 450 1GB, which features a clock frequency of 783 MHz and a GDDR5 memory frequency of 902 MHz. It also features a 128-bit bus, and uses a 40 nm design. It features 192 SPUs, 32 TAUs, and 16 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

GeForce GT 315 52 Watts
GeForce GTS 450 1GB 106 Watts
Difference: 54 Watts (104%)

Memory Bandwidth

Theoretically speaking, the GeForce GTS 450 1GB should perform quite a bit faster than the GeForce GT 315 in general. (explain)

GeForce GTS 450 1GB 57728 MB/sec
GeForce GT 315 25280 MB/sec
Difference: 32448 (128%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce GTS 450 1GB should be quite a bit (more or less 151%) faster with regards to texture filtering than the GeForce GT 315. (explain)

GeForce GTS 450 1GB 25056 Mtexels/sec
GeForce GT 315 10000 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 15056 (151%)

Pixel Rate

If using a high resolution is important to you, then the GeForce GTS 450 1GB is the winner, by a large margin. (explain)

GeForce GTS 450 1GB 12528 Mpixels/sec
GeForce GT 315 5000 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 7528 (151%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the largest amount of information (in units of MB per second) that can be transported over the external memory interface in a second. It is calculated by multiplying the bus width by the speed of its memory. If the card has DDR type memory, the result should be multiplied by 2 again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The higher the memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, High Dynamic Range and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that are processed per second. This figure is calculated by multiplying the total texture units by the core speed of the chip. The higher this number, the better the video card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels the graphics card can possibly write to the local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is worked out by multiplying the number of colour ROPs by the the core clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - sometimes also referred to as Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel output rate is also dependant on lots of other factors, especially the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to get to the maximum fill rate.
