GeForce GTS 450 1GB vs Radeon HD 6970

Intro

The GeForce GTS 450 1GB has a GPU clock speed of 783 MHz, and the 1024 MB of GDDR5 memory runs at 902 MHz through a 128-bit bus. It also is made up of 192 SPUs, 32 Texture Address Units, and 16 Raster Operation Units.

Compare those specifications to the Radeon HD 6970, which has a clock frequency of 880 MHz and a GDDR5 memory frequency of 1375 MHz. It also makes use of a 256-bit memory bus, and uses a 40 nm design. It is made up of 1536 SPUs, 96 Texture Address Units, and 32 Raster Operation Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

GeForce GTS 450 1GB 106 Watts
Radeon HD 6970 250 Watts
Difference: 144 Watts (136%)

Memory Bandwidth

Theoretically, the Radeon HD 6970 should be much faster than the GeForce GTS 450 1GB overall. (explain)

Radeon HD 6970 176000 MB/sec
GeForce GTS 450 1GB 57728 MB/sec
Difference: 118272 (205%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon HD 6970 will be much (more or less 237%) faster with regards to AF than the GeForce GTS 450 1GB. (explain)

Radeon HD 6970 84480 Mtexels/sec
GeForce GTS 450 1GB 25056 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 59424 (237%)

Pixel Rate

If using a high screen resolution is important to you, then the Radeon HD 6970 is a better choice, and very much so. (explain)

Radeon HD 6970 28160 Mpixels/sec
GeForce GTS 450 1GB 12528 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 15632 (125%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the largest amount of information (measured in MB per second) that can be transferred across the external memory interface within a second. It is calculated by multiplying the interface width by the speed of its memory. If the card has DDR type RAM, it should be multiplied by 2 once again. If DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The higher the bandwidth is, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, High Dynamic Range and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that are processed per second. This is worked out by multiplying the total amount of texture units by the core clock speed of the chip. The better the texel rate, the better the card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels the video card could possibly write to the local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is calculated by multiplying the number of Render Output Units by the clock speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel fill rate also depends on lots of other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to reach the max fill rate.
