GeForce 8300 GS (OEM) vs GeForce GT 440 3GB

Intro

The GeForce 8300 GS (OEM) features a GPU clock speed of 450 MHz, and the 128 MB of DDR2 memory is set to run at 400 MHz through a 64-bit bus. It also features 8 SPUs, 4 TAUs, and 2 ROPs.

Compare those specifications to the GeForce GT 440 3GB, which has core clock speeds of 594 MHz on the GPU, and 900 MHz on the 3072 MB of GDDR3 memory. It features 144 SPUs as well as 24 TAUs and 24 Rasterization Operator Units.

GeForce 8300 GS (OEM) 40 Watts
GeForce GT 440 3GB 56 Watts
Difference: 16 Watts (40%)

Memory Bandwidth

As far as performance goes, the GeForce GT 440 3GB should in theory be much superior to the GeForce 8300 GS (OEM) in general. (explain)

GeForce GT 440 3GB 43200 MB/sec
GeForce 8300 GS (OEM) 6400 MB/sec
Difference: 36800 (575%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce GT 440 3GB will be much (more or less 692%) more effective at anisotropic filtering than the GeForce 8300 GS (OEM). (explain)

GeForce GT 440 3GB 14256 Mtexels/sec
GeForce 8300 GS (OEM) 1800 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 12456 (692%)

Pixel Rate

If using a high resolution is important to you, then the GeForce GT 440 3GB is the winner, by far. (explain)

GeForce GT 440 3GB 14256 Mpixels/sec
GeForce 8300 GS (OEM) 900 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 13356 (1484%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the max amount of information (counted in MB per second) that can be transported over the external memory interface in a second. The number is worked out by multiplying the card's interface width by the speed of its memory. If the card has DDR RAM, the result should be multiplied by 2 again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The higher the bandwidth is, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that are processed in one second. This figure is calculated by multiplying the total amount of texture units by the core speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels that the graphics card can possibly record to the local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is calculated by multiplying the amount of ROPs by the clock speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - sometimes also referred to as Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel fill rate also depends on lots of other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to reach the maximum fill rate.
