GeForce GT 440 3GB vs Radeon HD 6750

Intro

The GeForce GT 440 3GB features core clock speeds of 594 MHz on the GPU, and 900 MHz on the 3072 MB of GDDR3 RAM. It features 144 SPUs as well as 24 TAUs and 24 ROPs.

Compare all that to the Radeon HD 6750, which comes with a clock frequency of 725 MHz and a GDDR5 memory speed of 1000 MHz. It also makes use of a 128-bit memory bus, and uses a 40 nm design. It is comprised of 720 SPUs, 36 TAUs, and 16 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

GeForce GT 440 3GB 56 Watts
Radeon HD 6750 86 Watts
Difference: 30 Watts (54%)

Memory Bandwidth

The Radeon HD 6750 should in theory perform quite a bit faster than the GeForce GT 440 3GB overall. (explain)

Radeon HD 6750 64000 MB/sec
GeForce GT 440 3GB 43200 MB/sec
Difference: 20800 (48%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon HD 6750 will be much (approximately 83%) better at AF than the GeForce GT 440 3GB. (explain)

Radeon HD 6750 26100 Mtexels/sec
GeForce GT 440 3GB 14256 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 11844 (83%)

Pixel Rate

If running with a high resolution is important to you, then the GeForce GT 440 3GB is the winner, and very much so. (explain)

GeForce GT 440 3GB 14256 Mpixels/sec
Radeon HD 6750 11600 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 2656 (23%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the max amount of information (measured in MB per second) that can be transported over the external memory interface within a second. It's calculated by multiplying the bus width by its memory speed. If it uses DDR type memory, it should be multiplied by 2 again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The higher the memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, High Dynamic Range and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that are applied per second. This number is calculated by multiplying the total number of texture units by the core speed of the chip. The higher this number, the better the video card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels that the graphics card could possibly write to its local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is calculated by multiplying the number of colour ROPs by the the card's clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel output rate is also dependant on quite a few other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the potential to get to the max fill rate.
