GeForce GT 440 3GB vs Radeon HD 6850

Intro

The GeForce GT 440 3GB has a core clock frequency of 594 MHz and a GDDR3 memory frequency of 900 MHz. It also makes use of a 192-bit memory bus, and uses a 40 nm design. It is made up of 144 SPUs, 24 TAUs, and 24 Raster Operation Units.

Compare those specs to the Radeon HD 6850, which has clock speeds of 775 MHz on the GPU, and 1000 MHz on the 1024 MB of GDDR5 memory. It features 960 SPUs along with 48 TAUs and 32 ROPs.

Radeon HD 6850 128000 MB/sec
GeForce GT 440 3GB 43200 MB/sec
Difference: 84800 (196%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon HD 6850 will be much (more or less 161%) faster with regards to texture filtering than the GeForce GT 440 3GB. (explain)

Radeon HD 6850 37200 Mtexels/sec
GeForce GT 440 3GB 14256 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 22944 (161%)

Pixel Rate

If using a high screen resolution is important to you, then the Radeon HD 6850 is superior to the GeForce GT 440 3GB, by far. (explain)

Radeon HD 6850 24800 Mpixels/sec
GeForce GT 440 3GB 14256 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 10544 (74%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the largest amount of information (counted in megabytes per second) that can be transferred over the external memory interface in a second. The number is calculated by multiplying the card's interface width by the speed of its memory. In the case of DDR RAM, it must be multiplied by 2 once again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The higher the card's memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, High Dynamic Range and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that are processed in one second. This number is calculated by multiplying the total amount of texture units of the card by the core clock speed of the chip. The better the texel rate, the better the video card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels that the graphics card can possibly write to its local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is calculated by multiplying the amount of ROPs by the the core speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel rate is also dependant on lots of other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the potential to reach the max fill rate.
