GeForce 8300 GS (OEM) vs Radeon HD 6770 1GB

Intro

The GeForce 8300 GS (OEM) comes with core clock speeds of 450 MHz on the GPU, and 400 MHz on the 128 MB of DDR2 RAM. It features 8 SPUs as well as 4 TAUs and 2 Rasterization Operator Units.

Compare those specs to the Radeon HD 6770 1GB, which uses a 40 nm design. AMD has set the core speed at 900 MHz. The GDDR5 RAM works at a frequency of 1050 MHz on this model. It features 800 SPUs along with 40 Texture Address Units and 16 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

GeForce 8300 GS (OEM) 40 Watts
Radeon HD 6770 1GB 108 Watts
Difference: 68 Watts (170%)

Memory Bandwidth

As far as performance goes, the Radeon HD 6770 1GB should in theory be much better than the GeForce 8300 GS (OEM) in general. (explain)

Radeon HD 6770 1GB 67200 MB/sec
GeForce 8300 GS (OEM) 6400 MB/sec
Difference: 60800 (950%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon HD 6770 1GB will be quite a bit (more or less 1900%) faster with regards to anisotropic filtering than the GeForce 8300 GS (OEM). (explain)

Radeon HD 6770 1GB 36000 Mtexels/sec
GeForce 8300 GS (OEM) 1800 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 34200 (1900%)

Pixel Rate

If running with high levels of AA is important to you, then the Radeon HD 6770 1GB is the winner, by far. (explain)

Radeon HD 6770 1GB 14400 Mpixels/sec
GeForce 8300 GS (OEM) 900 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 13500 (1500%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the maximum amount of information (measured in megabytes per second) that can be transferred over the external memory interface in one second. The number is worked out by multiplying the interface width by its memory clock speed. If it uses DDR memory, the result should be multiplied by 2 again. If DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The higher the bandwidth is, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, High Dynamic Range and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that can be processed in one second. This figure is calculated by multiplying the total number of texture units of the card by the core clock speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the video card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels the video card can possibly write to its local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is calculated by multiplying the number of Render Output Units by the the card's clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel rate also depends on quite a few other factors, especially the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the ability to reach the maximum fill rate.
