Radeon HD 3690/3830 vs Radeon HD 6750 1GB

Intro

The Radeon HD 3690/3830 features core speeds of 668 MHz on the GPU, and 828 MHz on the 256 MB of GDDR3 RAM. It features 320(64x5) SPUs along with 16 Texture Address Units and 16 ROPs.

Compare all that to the Radeon HD 6750 1GB, which uses a 40 nm design. AMD has clocked the core speed at 725 MHz. The GDDR5 RAM works at a speed of 1000 MHz on this specific model. It features 720 SPUs along with 36 TAUs and 16 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

Radeon HD 3690/3830 75 Watts
Radeon HD 6750 1GB 86 Watts
Difference: 11 Watts (15%)

Memory Bandwidth

In theory, the Radeon HD 6750 1GB should be quite a bit faster than the Radeon HD 3690/3830 overall. (explain)

Radeon HD 6750 1GB 64000 MB/sec
Radeon HD 3690/3830 26496 MB/sec
Difference: 37504 (142%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon HD 6750 1GB should be quite a bit (about 144%) more effective at AF than the Radeon HD 3690/3830. (explain)

Radeon HD 6750 1GB 26100 Mtexels/sec
Radeon HD 3690/3830 10688 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 15412 (144%)

Pixel Rate

If running with high levels of AA is important to you, then the Radeon HD 6750 1GB is the winner, but not by far. (explain)

Radeon HD 6750 1GB 11600 Mpixels/sec
Radeon HD 3690/3830 10688 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 912 (9%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the max amount of data (in units of megabytes per second) that can be moved across the external memory interface in a second. It is worked out by multiplying the interface width by the speed of its memory. In the case of DDR memory, it should be multiplied by 2 again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The better the memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, HDR and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that are processed in one second. This figure is calculated by multiplying the total texture units by the core speed of the chip. The better this number, the better the video card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels that the graphics card could possibly record to the local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is calculated by multiplying the number of colour ROPs by the the core speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - aka Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel output rate is also dependant on many other factors, especially the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to get to the maximum fill rate.
