Radeon RX 6800 vs Radeon RX 7900 XT

Intro

The Radeon RX 6800 features core speeds of 1700 MHz on the GPU, and 2000 MHz on the 16384 MB of GDDR6 RAM. It features 3840 SPUs as well as 240 Texture Address Units and 96 Rasterization Operator Units.

Compare all of that to the Radeon RX 7900 XT, which has a clock speed of 1500 MHz and a GDDR6 memory speed of 2500 MHz. It also features a 320-bit memory bus, and makes use of a 5 nm design. It is made up of 5376 SPUs, 336 Texture Address Units, and 192 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

Radeon RX 6800 250 Watts
Radeon RX 7900 XT 300 Watts
Difference: 50 Watts (20%)

Memory Bandwidth

Theoretically speaking, the Radeon RX 7900 XT should be 56% faster than the Radeon RX 6800 overall, because of its higher data rate. (explain)

Radeon RX 7900 XT 819200 MB/sec
Radeon RX 6800 524288 MB/sec
Difference: 294912 (56%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon RX 7900 XT should be quite a bit (about 24%) better at anisotropic filtering than the Radeon RX 6800. (explain)

Radeon RX 7900 XT 504000 Mtexels/sec
Radeon RX 6800 408000 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 96000 (24%)

Pixel Rate

If using lots of anti-aliasing is important to you, then the Radeon RX 7900 XT is a better choice, by a large margin. (explain)

Radeon RX 7900 XT 288000 Mpixels/sec
Radeon RX 6800 163200 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 124800 (76%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the max amount of data (in units of megabytes per second) that can be moved past the external memory interface in one second. It is calculated by multiplying the card's bus width by its memory speed. If it uses DDR type RAM, it should be multiplied by 2 once again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The better the card's memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, High Dynamic Range and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that are applied per second. This figure is worked out by multiplying the total texture units of the card by the core clock speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels that the graphics card can possibly write to its local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is calculated by multiplying the amount of colour ROPs by the the card's clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - aka Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel rate also depends on quite a few other factors, especially the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the ability to reach the max fill rate.
