Radeon RX 6700 XT vs Radeon RX 7900 XT

Intro

The Radeon RX 6700 XT features a GPU core speed of 2321 MHz, and the (Unknown) MB of GDDR6 memory runs at 2000 MHz through a 192-bit bus. It also features 2560 Stream Processors, 160 TAUs, and 64 ROPs.

Compare those specs to the Radeon RX 7900 XT, which makes use of a 5 nm design. AMD has clocked the core frequency at 1500 MHz. The GDDR6 memory runs at a speed of 2500 MHz on this particular card. It features 5376 SPUs as well as 336 Texture Address Units and 192 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

Radeon RX 6700 XT 230 Watts
Radeon RX 7900 XT 300 Watts
Difference: 70 Watts (30%)

Memory Bandwidth

In theory, the Radeon RX 7900 XT should perform quite a bit faster than the Radeon RX 6700 XT overall. (explain)

Radeon RX 7900 XT 819200 MB/sec
Radeon RX 6700 XT 393216 MB/sec
Difference: 425984 (108%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon RX 7900 XT will be much (about 36%) more effective at texture filtering than the Radeon RX 6700 XT. (explain)

Radeon RX 7900 XT 504000 Mtexels/sec
Radeon RX 6700 XT 371360 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 132640 (36%)

Pixel Rate

If running with a high resolution is important to you, then the Radeon RX 7900 XT is a better choice, by far. (explain)

Radeon RX 7900 XT 288000 Mpixels/sec
Radeon RX 6700 XT 148544 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 139456 (94%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the largest amount of data (in units of MB per second) that can be transferred past the external memory interface in one second. It is worked out by multiplying the card's bus width by its memory speed. In the case of DDR type RAM, it should be multiplied by 2 again. If DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The better the bandwidth is, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, HDR and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that can be processed in one second. This figure is calculated by multiplying the total number of texture units of the card by the core speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the video card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels the video card could possibly write to the local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is calculated by multiplying the amount of colour ROPs by the the card's clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - sometimes also referred to as Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel rate is also dependant on lots of other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to get to the max fill rate.
