GeForce RTX 3070 Ti vs Radeon RX 6950 XT

Intro

The GeForce RTX 3070 Ti has core clock speeds of 1575 MHz on the GPU, and 1188 MHz on the 8192 MB of GDDR6X memory. It features 6144 SPUs along with 192 Texture Address Units and 96 Rasterization Operator Units.

Compare those specifications to the Radeon RX 6950 XT, which features GPU clock speed of 1925 MHz, and 16384 MB of GDDR6 RAM set to run at 2250 MHz through a 256-bit bus. It also is comprised of 5120 SPUs, 320 Texture Address Units, and 128 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

GeForce RTX 3070 Ti 290 Watts
Radeon RX 6950 XT 335 Watts
Difference: 45 Watts (16%)

Memory Bandwidth

As far as performance goes, the GeForce RTX 3070 Ti should theoretically be a small bit better than the Radeon RX 6950 XT in general. (explain)

GeForce RTX 3070 Ti 622899 MB/sec
Radeon RX 6950 XT 589824 MB/sec
Difference: 33075 (6%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon RX 6950 XT will be quite a bit (more or less 104%) better at AF than the GeForce RTX 3070 Ti. (explain)

Radeon RX 6950 XT 616000 Mtexels/sec
GeForce RTX 3070 Ti 302400 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 313600 (104%)

Pixel Rate

If running with high levels of AA is important to you, then the Radeon RX 6950 XT is the winner, by far. (explain)

Radeon RX 6950 XT 246400 Mpixels/sec
GeForce RTX 3070 Ti 151200 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 95200 (63%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the maximum amount of information (measured in MB per second) that can be transported past the external memory interface in one second. The number is calculated by multiplying the interface width by its memory speed. If the card has DDR RAM, the result should be multiplied by 2 again. If DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The higher the card's memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, High Dynamic Range and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that are processed in one second. This is worked out by multiplying the total number of texture units of the card by the core speed of the chip. The better this number, the better the card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels that the graphics chip could possibly record to its local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is calculated by multiplying the amount of colour ROPs by the the core speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel fill rate also depends on quite a few other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the ability to get to the maximum fill rate.
