Radeon RX 470 vs Radeon RX 6600

Intro

The Radeon RX 470 features a GPU core speed of 926 MHz, and the 8192 MB of GDDR5 RAM is set to run at 1650 MHz through a 256-bit bus. It also features 2048 SPUs, 128 TAUs, and 32 Raster Operation Units.

Compare all that to the Radeon RX 6600, which comes with clock speeds of 1626 MHz on the GPU, and 1750 MHz on the 8192 MB of GDDR6 RAM. It features 1792 SPUs along with 112 TAUs and 64 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

Radeon RX 470 120 Watts
Radeon RX 6600 132 Watts
Difference: 12 Watts (10%)

Memory Bandwidth

Theoretically speaking, the Radeon RX 6600 should be 9% quicker than the Radeon RX 470 in general, due to its greater bandwidth. (explain)

Radeon RX 6600 229376 MB/sec
Radeon RX 470 211200 MB/sec
Difference: 18176 (9%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon RX 6600 will be much (more or less 54%) better at texture filtering than the Radeon RX 470. (explain)

Radeon RX 6600 182112 Mtexels/sec
Radeon RX 470 118528 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 63584 (54%)

Pixel Rate

If using a high screen resolution is important to you, then the Radeon RX 6600 is a better choice, and very much so. (explain)

Radeon RX 6600 104064 Mpixels/sec
Radeon RX 470 29632 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 74432 (251%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the largest amount of data (in units of MB per second) that can be moved past the external memory interface within a second. It is calculated by multiplying the card's interface width by its memory clock speed. If the card has DDR type RAM, the result should be multiplied by 2 again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The better the memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, HDR and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that can be processed per second. This figure is worked out by multiplying the total texture units of the card by the core speed of the chip. The better this number, the better the card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels the video card can possibly write to its local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is calculated by multiplying the amount of Render Output Units by the the core speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - aka Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel output rate also depends on lots of other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to get to the max fill rate.
