GeForce GTX 550 Ti vs Radeon RX 6600 XT

Intro

The GeForce GTX 550 Ti features a clock speed of 900 MHz and a GDDR5 memory speed of 1026 MHz. It also features a 192-bit memory bus, and makes use of a 40 nm design. It is comprised of 192 SPUs, 32 Texture Address Units, and 24 ROPs.

Compare those specifications to the Radeon RX 6600 XT, which makes use of a 7 nm design. AMD has set the core speed at 1968 MHz. The GDDR6 memory runs at a frequency of 2000 MHz on this particular card. It features 2048 SPUs as well as 128 Texture Address Units and 64 Rasterization Operator Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

GeForce GTX 550 Ti 116 Watts
Radeon RX 6600 XT 160 Watts
Difference: 44 Watts (38%)

Memory Bandwidth

Theoretically speaking, the Radeon RX 6600 XT should perform much faster than the GeForce GTX 550 Ti overall. (explain)

Radeon RX 6600 XT 262144 MB/sec
GeForce GTX 550 Ti 98496 MB/sec
Difference: 163648 (166%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon RX 6600 XT is quite a bit (more or less 775%) better at AF than the GeForce GTX 550 Ti. (explain)

Radeon RX 6600 XT 251904 Mtexels/sec
GeForce GTX 550 Ti 28800 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 223104 (775%)

Pixel Rate

If using high levels of AA is important to you, then the Radeon RX 6600 XT is the winner, by far. (explain)

Radeon RX 6600 XT 125952 Mpixels/sec
GeForce GTX 550 Ti 21600 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 104352 (483%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the largest amount of information (measured in MB per second) that can be transferred over the external memory interface in a second. The number is calculated by multiplying the bus width by the speed of its memory. If it uses DDR type memory, it must be multiplied by 2 again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The better the card's memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that are applied per second. This number is worked out by multiplying the total texture units of the card by the core speed of the chip. The better the texel rate, the better the video card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels the video card can possibly write to the local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is worked out by multiplying the amount of colour ROPs by the the card's clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel fill rate also depends on many other factors, especially the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the ability to get to the max fill rate.
